Maybe it was the wintry weather. Maybe it wasn’t. Whatever it was, the Great Northern Blues Society served up some serious blues at its 20th anniversary Blues Cafe winter celebration in Wausau, Wis.
If you didn’t make the trek, you missed a great show in a friendly and historic venue. And you missed a rare opportunity.
I try to partake of as many of these opportunities as I can. I like them, I have fun at them and – more often than not – I get to hear some fantastic music. Selfishly, that’s the biggest reason I go.
But this best reason to go isn’t about me. It’s about the people who put in the time, effort, money and miles to pay for and put on the show. Be they players or promoters, they’re offering something I like in exchange for a few bucks.
Those dollars usually aren’t very much. And, sure, there’s time when the Monopoly man from the bank says I’m too broke to go. But to play you gottta pay. And what I’m generally asked to pay isn’t really all that much.
